A Gantt Chart is a project management tool from the Microsoft Excel suite of spreadsheets. This Chart shows relevant tasks or events displayed against a specific timeline. A Gantt Chart may be just one tool in your effective Project Management suite of tools.

Usually, shown on the left of the chart is a list of the tasks or activities and along the top is shown a suitable time scale.

Every activity is represented by an individual bar. The position and length of the bar reflects the start date, duration and end date of the activity. The appropriate space on the chart is filled in each time a task/activity is completed. The up to date Gantt Chart then allows you to see at a glance:

  • What the various activities are
  • When each activity begins and ends
  • How long each activity is scheduled to last
